Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was well known for its coffee in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. However, a disease called ‘Coffee Blight’ virtually wiped out all the coffee on the island in the early 1800’s. James Taylor was the first British tea planter to start a commercial tea estate in 1867. Since then Sri Lanka’s world famous Ceylon Tea has become one of the best quality and most popular teas in the world.
